The Forgotten Flag

An abandoned Canadian Car Flag.
An abandoned Canadian Car Flag.

Its not the first time this has happened, but again today while travelling down the highway I saw at a distance on the shoulder our beloved colours of red and white attached to a white plastic pole of sorts.

It did not take long to realize that this was a Canadian car flag.

So immediately I pulled off the road and when safe went back to pick it up.

Makes me wonder how many thousands of people went by our flag and simply looked at it.

It was in a position on the side of the road that anyone could have safely retrieved it.

On a previous occasion I came upon another abandoned car flag this time it was lying in the middle of a turning lane, I saw it from a distance and like it was meant to be I stopped just before it due to heavy traffic.

It gave me the perfect opportunity to get out of my Canadian Heroes Memorial Vehicle and walk over and retrieve it.

Once again thousands of people have driven by it and just ignored it laying there.

This flag however was very dirty from road grime and such it was clear that it was on the road for some time and was run over by passing vehicles. This flag will be retired during one of our Canadian Flag retirement ceremonies.

With Canada Day approaching and Canadians starting to fly our Countries colours at home and on their vehicles, there will no doubt be many more flags laying on the sides of the roads.

You can make sure this does not happen by making sure you properly affix the flag to your car, stay tuned for a video explaining how to do this and some of the mistakes we see people doing.

Try to find and purchase a flag that will withstand the forces applied to it when travelling down the road, some of the dollar store ones will fail on your first trip.

If you know that it will rain or does start to rain remove the flag and let it dry, because a wet flag will weigh a lot more and put additional stress on the plastic staff, leading to a faster chance of snapping the pole.

The flags are also not intended for highway speeds or prolonged exposure to high speeds, so be aware of this and check your flags after a highway run.

If you have your flags on the rear windows, engage the window lock out button, most newer cars have them as a safety measure for your children, this will help prevent accidental loss of flags if the rear windows are put down. This button is usually located by the drivers side window controls.

Check to see how the flag is attached to the pole, some are better than others you may want to keep an eye on this and make sure it is attached properly, check and even apply additional pressure to the fasteners.
