Const. David Wynn, one of two RCMP officers shot in St. Albert, Alta., last weekend, died in hospital this morning, RCMP say.

Wynn, 42, never regained consciousness after he was shot while responding to a call at a casino in the city northwest of Edmonton.

Wynn was married with three children.

The RCMP plans to hold a regimental funeral for Wynn. Details will be announced at a later date.

St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse extended his condolences to Wynn’s family on behalf of city council and residents.

Flags outside the St. Albert RCMP detachment were lowered to half-mast. CBC reporter John Archer said drivers were honking their horns as they passed by.

Wynn worked as a paramedic in Bridgewater, N.S., for years. He was one of the emergency workers who responded to the crash of Swissair Flight 111 off Peggy’s Cove in September 1998.

Wynn fulfilled a life-long dream by joining the RCMP in 2009.

Police say both officers were shot by Shawn MaxwellRehn, 34, who was tracked to an unoccupied rural home east of St. Albert. Police found Rehn’s body inside the home.

Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan told CBC News on Tuesday that Wynn and Bond encountered Rehn after checking licence plates in the parking lot of the Apex Casino.

Wynn was suspicious about a plate that didn’t match the truck it was attached to. Both officers identified the suspect after reviewing security footage.

They encountered Rehn on their way out of the building. That’s when he pulled a gun and fired two shots, striking Wynn in the head, Ryan said.

“Today, the RCMP lost a dedicated member in the line of duty, his wife lost a husband, and his sons lost a father,” said Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Alberta. “Words cannot express the deep sadness we feel today.”

Cst. Wynn is survived by his wife Shelly and three sons Matthew, Nathan and Alexander. The family lives in St. Albert. We ask that reporters respect their privacy during this difficult time.

The RCMP sincerely thanks the community of St. Albert and citizens from throughout Alberta and across Canada for supporting our employees during this sad time.

There will be a Regimental Funeral in the Edmonton area, with details to follow later.
