Roger Borchert
As we think of the end of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan a bitter sweet thought from a very proud Canadian welcoming the last of soldiers home from Afghanistan but wishing to see all of those who’ve served, truly find their way home.

So proudly I rise, a Canadian
To stand for those who’ve stood
Who’ve given so much on our behalf
As every Canadian should
So proud to welcome
Our final soldiers back
To a homeland strong and free
To the nation they stood proudly for
Canada they stood on guard for thee
They say the mission’s over
They say it’s at an end
Canadian eyes should focus forth
On their homeland once again
12 years serving in the sandbox
Stepping forth to a better world
So many paid the price to say
We’ve helped our world again
But is the mission truly over
Or is that just what’s on the news
Lord when can our nation proudly stand
Say we’ve truly brought them home
Is it when the brass band joyously plays
A national anthem in the ears
Of those who want to hear the sound
Will it wash away the tears
So many sons and daughters stood
And still struggle to come home
To the pride of friends and families
Who dearly wish they weren’t alone
Wandering streets, chasing beasts
That haunt their every dream
Or cloud the vision of a life that was
Before they encountered all they’ve seen
Canada I say to you
Restore the pride that stood
In a brethren who stepped for us
And put forth our nation’s good
Leave wounded not in poverty
Leave them not homeless on our streets
Provide the care
That truly brings them home
Brings them home to us
